On Chance Road: A thumb print of Britain
Uncertainty hits the road!
What journey was he on? Where are we heading? These were the questions Laurence asked himself and all who gave him lifts as he hitchhiked the length of Britain.
He was astonished how freely people bared their lives to a complete stranger or the richness of the stories they told, from drifter to doctor, fiddler to farrier, barman and bus driver to boss. He even had a poignant meeting with Jethro, the teller of risqué blue jokes who revealed a more vulnerable side to himself, and now sadly passed on.
Read what people make of their everyday lives and how past events can both haunt and hearten them. From the very start of his journey he heard how one life-changing accident turned out to be for the very best. Chance was there every inch of the way, leading in directions he could never anticipate … or forget.
Reviews
‘He charts many intriguing encounters, telling stories of Roman soldiers, Cornish pirates, blue comedians, bricklayers and managing directors. The people he met fill this book with humorous, poignant and bizarre tales that will have you laughing and crying.’
- Cornwall Life
‘As in ‘Off-the-Wall’ the story has proved to be riveting. I chuckle when I relate to recognisable situations. It is part of what makes your book so ‘unputdownable’.’
- Alf Gilliker, hill walker
‘Beneath the fascinating day-to-day account of his meetings and conversations … lies the sub-text and where the book really takes off for me. Laurence becomes more involved in and intrigued by chance and connections, coincidence and synchronicity – and the wealth of serendipitous experiences that he interprets en route as signs and guidance.’
- Marcus Bolt, author
‘Thank you for sending two copies of ‘On Chance Road.’ It’s brilliant. Please would you send two more copies.’

Short-listed for the 2012 National Self-Publishing Award
‘On Chance Road’ was launched at the Penzance Literary Festival and Appledore Book Festival, with book signings at WH Smith and Waterstones. But these events were capped by a meeting at Helston Library in Cornwall. Laurence was able to present a copy of the book to Ingrid, the lady in the Most Southerly House at Lizard Point where the journey began with the riveting story of how she and her husband Snowy came to live there, a chance event all of its own.
