About Me

Cartoon of Smashed phone

We can have many faces: some for the camera and others when caught off guard! This cartoon pic is how creative colleagues saw me on leaving a high-pressure job in advertising. From there I qualified to teach art and ceramics, then sold conservatories, before taking to heart my real passion: writing.

What does it take to forge a new direction in life? That has been a key theme in my writing. Golden opportunities may arise but frustration can often be a force for change and words a catalyst. At a very stressful time in one job, a woman came into my office, simply said ‘What are you doing here?’ and walked out. When I chased after her, she replied that she always had to say what came into her mouth. I thanked her. That gave me the impetus to move on and set my words free.

It took me on unpredictable paths. Whether buying boots the day before a long-distance hike, hitchhiking the length of Britain, or discovering how a character might rebuild his life after a car crash tears it apart, my writing has taken me into unknown territory. My life does that too, with synchronicity often leading the way. A chance meeting inspired me to take up an MA in Fine Arts and my latest leap in the dark.

My project – ‘What is Life?’ – highlights the impact an afterlife dream had on my great-uncle, Percy Shelley, 130 years ago. The tantalising thought is that he saw himself – Percy Shelley – in another face: that of his namesake, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.
